4Not to spec - but better with Presta Valve holes!
By James C. Liu
I ordered two Alex X202 36H rims from Niagara Cycle Works and received a 32H and a 36H. Not a problem since I'm building wheels for someone light and was thinking about a 32H front rim, and didn't want to use my limited stock Ritchey Vantage Comps for simple street commute purposes. However, if you're a stickler for specs, be ready to call up the fulfillment folks at Niagara Cycle Works or Amazon and deal with the problem, since it was by luck that I have the parts needed to build the wheel.

The X202 cross-section (according to alexrims.com), is supposed to be 25mm total width. It's actually 25.8mm. So if you're looking for a more narrow rim, try the Sun Ringle CR18 or the Alex DC19 which are narrower and double walled. Inside width is also 18.5mm and not 19mm. This will have an added benefit however, which I discuss below.

Another thing off spec was the valve drilling, which is supposedly Schrader according to the website, but actually arrived as Presta. Fortunately for me, because I stock mostly presta valve tubes and prefer presta for easy pumping, I actually now want to get a few more sets of rims. LOL! Lucky again!

These rims are somewhat heavy, but not overly so since they are single walled, and I really like the rim lip the tire-bead. Above, I noted that the actual width of the rim was 25.8mm and the inside width was 18.5mm. This means that the lip of the rim that holds the bead is about 3.5mm thick and gives ample room for the bead to seat well. So I put a rim strip on and then installed tube with super-cheap Kenda K838 26 x 1.95" grooved fat slick tire which has a slightly too big and bulky wire bead - the kind that lots of amateur bike mechanics will complain, "...blows off the rim." This is my test tire for MTB clinchers. It's so loose, I barely need thumb and index finger to mount it on most rims. I inflated and deflated with the tire in different orientations to test if the bead seated correctly each time. I have to say, the Alex X202 really grabbed the bead and held it consistently around the rim. And consider the fact that these rims are single-walled and have a center valley recess which means the tube has to expand vertically. That expansion can stretch the tube and lift the tire bead out of the side wells, which does happen on other rims, but not with this rim.

And for the folks wondering about rim braking and surface quality, I'm quite pleased. These don't come with a machined side wall, but the surface is satin and very consistent with no apparent flat spots or inconsistencies in width. Braking with most pads will be excellent. And the pin joint is no less accurate than my Araya, Sun/Ritchey or Mavic rims.

If I were a stickler for specs, I'd have given these rims 2-stars, but upon closer examination, these are very decent rims for the price and if properly built, should last a long time. The rims get 5-stars for price-performance. But I deducted 1-star for getting the order and specs wrong.

Edit - after 1 yr:

I just wanted to add that after a year of service, the rims hold true, wheels are in perfect shape. This rim is still a great bargain.

5Good rim for the price
By G. O'Connor
Like another reviewer's, mine came drilled for a presta valve -- not a Schraeder like the product information says. No problem. I was expecting a presta valve anyway.

Another reviewer ordered 36H rims, but received 32 hole rims from Niagara Cycle Works so I ordered mine from Xtreme Bike & Sport and received the part I ordered.

I used the effective rim diameter of 547 mm in the product information to calculate spoke length. I never did measure it, but I guess 547 is correct because everything fit together nicely after I finished building the wheel.
