27 inch Alex X404 rims
By Thomas P. Olson
I bought a pair of these, in the 27inch size, a year ago to lighten up the wheels on a 70s road bike. There are a few things you should know about these rims.
1. They are WIDE. Even though the dimensions were given here, in your hand they seem really wide. The 27mm width is accurate. I wouldn't use any tires smaller than 1 1/4 on these rims. Those still leave a little bit bulge wider than the rim.
2. The 322g weight stated is totally wrong. That shouldn't be a surprise to anyone that buys rims to build/rebuild wheels. At 560g and 561g, the pair I received are a lot more than stated (all over the internet) but a whole lot less than the 870g steel Araya rims they replaced.
3. The ERD of these rims was a little less than the Araya, and I ended up having to take a couple swipes of a file to half a dozen spokes that were a little above the nipples. If I were to do this again I'd spend a few dollars to at least buy new drive side spokes that were a couple mm shorter. (the rear drive side spokes were the only ones that had some spokes a little long)
With proper tensioning, and stressing, these trued to less than 1/2mm. They've held up well since then. I've only done minor adjustment when I've replaced tires. That is generally around 1800-2000 miles. I have just over 4300 miles on these currently, with about 500 on the latest set of tires. At 60+ I don't generate the kind of power that a 30 year old does, so I feel the difference of shedding 300 grams of rotating weight. As an inexpensive rim these are a good investment for me. I'm also 175 lbs, and my riding is all on streets or paved bike trails. I also do my grocery/errands with this bike, so at least once a week I have an extra 30-50 lbs over the rear wheel. YMMV

good utility rim
By Barry Kafka
This rim is wide and on the heavy side. It's only single-walled but it builds into a strong wheel. I'm 170lbs and running it on a winter commuter with an internal gear hub. The wheel is going on its second season and I have not needed to true it yet. This is the cheapest option in a new rim and works great.

Weight stated by manufacturer is WRONG
By Susan Gold
Manufacturer states 322 grs for weight.. in reality it's around 570 grs.
Ok for cost. I bought for a light weight front.. which it is not. Fine though
for most all riders for a rear wheel build.
