5Best Rim Tape Tested - Ain't Cheap, But Worth It
By Online Junkie
After a long hiatus away for cycling, 6 months ago I rediscovered cycling... I've sorta gone bike crazy as I bought about a dozen bikes in the last 3-4 months. Mostly road bikes but a few MTB's as well. Back in the 80's they didn't have these cloth tapes, just the rubber strips like motorcycle rim strips. But the rubber strips don't work very well on bicycles which translates into lots of flats. At the various LBS, they want $10 each! Come'on LBS, don't force us to buy online! Even buying them online is expensive because of the s/h, but... these cloth rim tapes will probably last 20 years.

The 10mm strip is perfect size for my 27" and 700c road bike wheels. Velox also sells a 3/8" which is the same size as this 10mm and of course also works great for road bikes. I've tried the Sette 12mm rim strips which are pretty good quality, but they are 2mm wider and I have to be VERY careful installing them. The Sette also uses a removable paper backing on the adhesive whereas the Velox doesn't and so the Velox is faster and easier to install. Otherwise, if you are not careful, the tire might not properly seat on the rim. I just bought a couple of Zefal 10mm tapes to try out so I can't comment on them yet excepting they look very much like the Velox and I expect them to perform about the same.

I prefer Velox tapes and I think they are the best of the bunch. However, all of the other cloth/fabric tapes I've tried are all acceptable... So, I don't have a problem buying any of the fabric tapes, so I buy the ones that are the best price but I'm willing to pay up to 50 cents more for the Velox. Only the cheap rubber band strips I would not recommend.

Don't buy tapes that are for MTB's for road bikes and vice versa. Be sure you get the right size for your rims. Use the wide tape for MTB's and these thin ones for for your road bikes. I've replaced so many tires/tubes/tapes from all the bikes I recently bought and most of them I had to replace the tape when I replace/repair a tube/tire. The rim tapes are not the place to go cheap, even if you plan to flip a bike.

5Perfect for Dahon rims! Saves the tire tube
By rambo_son
For as long as I can remember Dahon with their special 20 inch rims have had an issue where the tire tubes look like they are punctured but fact is they are not! As the tube expands when inflated with air, the rubber will get caught on the spoke nut and tear a hole. The rim comes with a clear stretchy rim strip which is better than the rubber ones but still not good enough alone. My Solution! the Velox 10mm fabric rim tape. Perfect for the Dahon rims. You wrap this over the exposed nuts to even it out. I wrapped it with the whole entire roll so when I come around the second time I use a hole puncher to make a second hole. Then I take the clear stretchy rim strip and put that on top to give it a smooth surface that the fabric rim tape can not provide.

5Velox 10mm Rim Tape
By Kevin Barnsdale
This rim tape is just right for modern Cruiser bicycles like the Schwinn Windwood imported by Pacific Cycles. They need this narrow size. It goes on easy, stays in place, and is already punched out for the valve stem. It is thick enough to protect the tube from spoke puncture but is not too thick.
